User Activity Management
What is “User Activity Management”?

Gartner’s “Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2010”* contains one security technology:
“Activity Monitoring”. As explained by Gartner:

“Traditionally, security has focused on putting up a perimeter fence to keep others out, but it has evolved to monitoring activities and identifying patterns that would have been missed before. Information security professionals face the challenge of detecting malicious activity in a constant stream of discrete events that are usually associated with an authorized user and are generated from multiple network, system and application sources. At the same time, security departments are facing increasing demands for ever-greater log analysis and reporting to support audit requirements. A variety of complimentary (and sometimes overlapping) monitoring and analysis tools help enterprises better detect and investigate suspicious activity – often with real-time alerting or transaction intervention. By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of these tools, enterprises can better understand how to use them to defend the enterprise and meet audit requirements.”

User Activity Management is an approach to enterprise network security and compliance that captures and saves detailed user transactions across the enterprise, correlates this activity to identity management systems, indexes the data for quick access, and applies comprehensive reporting and proactive rules to the transaction data.

UAM systems have a “rule engine” that enables very specific security and compliance rules to be defined that can “blacklist” or “whitelist” user behavior and alert or (optionally) block user actions that are suspicious or out of the norm.

Stacking Up Cisco, McAfee and Websense

It’s no secret all security vendors claim to provide the best security solution. But how do you know which is truly the most efficient and right for your customers? Check out these independent tests and see how Websense Web Security Gateway stacks up to gateways offered by other vendors.

The Miercom test called “Miercom Secure Web Gateway Effectiveness Tests” – tested Websense Web Security Gateway compared to McAfee’s Web Gateway, Blue Coat’s Proxy SG and Cisco’s IronPort S650. The testing included detection and blocking for multiple categories of real-world malware including attacks designed to exploit Rich Internet Applications and the recently discovered, complex “Aurora” types of blended threats. The test also evaluated the solutions’ abilities to correctly categorize and block objectionable content contained within Web 2.0 sites, such as blogs and social networking. Additionally, the test reviewed the solutions’ abilities to implement data loss prevention (DLP) policies, including compliance with health and financial regulations.

Warning for "Distracting Beach Babes" on Facebook
Websense Security Labs
Websense® Security Labs™ has detected a malware spreading across Facebook that appears in the form of sexy videos. Websense Web Security Gateway protects users against these threats, the latest of which shows up in a tantalizing message and spreads when users click on the link. The link takes users to an application screen that requests access to the user’s profile and permission to post on the user’s wall.

If you click on the link, you'll be taken to an application installation screen that requests access to your profile and access post on your wall. This allows the application to send its message to your friends and post it on their walls. Once the user clicks “Allow” a page is displayed asking them to update their FLV Player which prompts the download of the malicious file.

This attack is exactly the same as one recently seen, so it's very probable that the file is yet another Hotbar Adware installer. If you haven't seen the video of how this attack works you can check it out on our YouTube channel. Facebook is aware of the problem and are actively removing both the wall posts and the malicious applications.

The Next Generation of Computer Interfaces Will Bring Together the Physical and Digital Worlds
Video: Merging Technology with Life and Closing the Gap
For many years I have believed that our everyday interfaces with computers are deeply limited, and that creating more effective interfaces is central to our future.

Pranav Mistry of MIT Media Lab's SixthSense has made his mission integrating our gestures in the physical world with the digital world. In this video taken at TED India, he tells his personal journey of exploration, beginning by taking apart his computer mouse, moving on to monitoring his gestures, headmounting cameras and projectors. Some of the technologies he shows include framing photographs by holding up his fingers, projecting live updates onto newspapers, making hands into phone dials, and far, far more. This is ultimately about bringing together the physical and digital worlds, helping making us more human.
